Quantitative Analysis Framework

Title: Development and Implementation of a Quantitative Analysis Framework for Irrigation Decision Making in the Gadananathi-Ramnadhi Basin, Tamil Nadu, India

The project, initiated in collaboration with IBM, IIT Madras, and local stakeholders, aims to address water scarcity and climate variability challenges in rice cultivation within the Gadananathi-Ramnadhi basin,Tamil Nadu. The project focuses on developing a farmer-friendly mobile application, ‘NeerPasanam,’ to provide irrigation advisories using weather forecasts, crop models, and soil information. This initiative seeks to enhance water productivity, reduce water wastage, and improve crop yields by integrating weather forecasts, soil data, and crop models into a user-friendly irrigation decision support system (IDSS).

Objectives:
The primary objective of this project is to develop and implement a quantitative framework for irrigation
decision-making based on 7-day weather forecasts. The specific objectives include:
1. Developing the "NeerPasanam" mobile application that provides weekly weather forecasts,
real-time
2. monitoring of field conditions, and irrigation advisories.
3. Implementing a semi-automated field instrumentation setup to monitor water levels in rice-
paddy fields.
4. Piloting the framework in the Gadananathi-Ramnadhi basin to evaluate its effectiveness in
enhancing
5. water productivity and managing climate risks.

The project methodology is centered around four key components:

  • Development of the Neer
  • Hydro-Geographical Profiling
  • Irrigation Monitoring Network
  • Irrigation Decision Support System (IDSS)
