Automatic Control of Rural Water Supply Schemes

Title: Automatic control of rural water supply schemes in the blocks of Padur and Paandeswaram of Thiruvallur district

Background: Piped water supply involves pumping of water from Under Ground Sump (UGS) / sources like Borewells to Over Head Tanks (OHT) and subsequent supply to end consumers by gravity through a piped water distribution network. Currently the water network in all rural and peri-urban areas is manually operated by operators with no feedback on the water pumped, delivered or water level in the OHTs/sumps or power consumption. This results in overflow in the OHTs due to improper operation of pumps, increased power consumption, unsatisfactory service levels and pump failures due to dry run.

Objective and aim:
The proposed project for wireless monitoring and control of water network will address the above mentioned issues. Two villages have been identified viz., Padur and Pandeeswaram, in district have been identified for doing a pilot project for demonstration. As a proof of concept, in each village, two pumps, two OHTs, supply and delivery lines will be equipped with required sensors and micro-controller based sensor interface units /pump control panels with wireless connectivity. Ultrasonic level transmitters will be installed in the UGS and OHT for remote monitoring of water levels and to switch off the pumps to prevent overflow. Energy meter and current transformer will be installed in pump panel for monitoring energy consumption of pumps and to protect the pump from over current or dry run.
