The Sharavathy Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project (PSP), being developed by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) with implementation support from Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), is a strategically important 2000 MW-class pumped storage scheme in Karnataka. With an approximately 478 m gross head and utilizing the existing Talakalale Reservoir as the upper pond and Gerusoppa Reservoir as the lower pond, the project offers significant potential for large-scale energy storage and grid balancing. Pumped storage is expected to play a critical role in integrating increasing quantities of intermittent renewable energy while enhancing grid stability, frequency regulation, peak-load management, spinning reserve and black-start capability.

Under a Research-Based Industrial Consultancy (RBIC) project supported by the Government of Karnataka, AquaMAP, IIT Madras, is providing specialized technical advice to KPCL on physical model     studies associated with the project. The consultancy encompasses hydraulic physical model studies covering the upstream and downstream reservoirs, intake and outlet structures, hydraulic conveyance systems, pressure shaft, surge arrangements and tailrace, as well as physical model studies of the pump-turbine and associated electro-mechanical systems.

AquaMAP has reviewed the proposed methodologies and test procedures for both civil hydraulic and hydro-turbomachinery model studies, witnessed hydraulic model testing, and provided technical comments on the consultant’s detailed test report. The team has also reviewed proposals for model testing of the pump-turbine and electrical equipment and provided recommendations to KPCL. The multidisciplinary IIT Madras team comprises experts in hydraulic engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, ensuring integrated technical oversight of the physical model studies and supporting reliable, efficient and safe implementation of this prestigious high-head pumped storage project.
