Water Stress

The problems related to water availability has wide reaching implications for residents in arid areas specifically, in the rural areas. It is estimated that approximately 76 million Indians don’t have access to safe drinking water, and this number continues to rise. Due to the overuse of water, there is an ever decreasing per capita availability of good quality water. The following are the drivers of water stress –

  • Population growth
  • Industrial development
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Encroachment of water bodies such as lakes and ponds
  • Inadequate management of wastewater and solid waste
  • Unsound waste disposal practices
  • Misguided policies

Save Water

IITM Alumni wish to do their best to solve the pressing and impending water crises in our country

IITM Resources

IITM already has several research centers such as ICCW, CTaP, IGCS, SUTRAM, PCoE on Water & Sustainability etc. which are addressing the water related issues

Implementation - Grand Challenges

Theme Identification

  • Determining the criteria for selecting the themes
  • Engaging a scientific advisory board for working on different themes
  • Identifying potential partners to co-deliver the themes
  • Approving the themes and putting them into action

Identifying the Grand Challenges (GCs)

  • Conducting in-depth analyses of each theme
  • Identifying and articulating the larger potential grand challenges in each theme
  • Identifying potential partners to bring the grand challenges to fruition
  • Approving the Grand Challenges and bringing them to life

Preparing and Evaluating Proposals

  • Preparing the request for proposals (RFPs)
  • Launching and sharing the RFPs with researchers and scholars
  • Evaluating the received proposals and identifying the teams for executing the GCs

Technological Innovations

Developing, and implementing solutions towards societal change

Executing the Grand Challenges

  • Developing stringent guidelines for implementing the GCs
  • Developing the monitoring framework for implementing the GCs
  • Developing the framework for measuring and reviewing the impact on the field
  • Dovetail with AquaMAP
